AI visibility for mechanics in Australia
A driver with a car that will not start asks AI who to call. Is it you?
A breakdown is not a research project. People ask ChatGPT, Gemini or Google's AI Overviews who can look at it today, and they ring the first name. If yours is not in that answer, the job goes to the workshop that is.
Free. Can a machine read your site: structured data, crawler access, page speed. Emailed in minutes, no card.
Nothing records this. Your analytics can only count the people who arrived.
This is what the assistant actually answers
Real ChatGPT answer
"my car won't start in Marrickville, Sydney. Which mechanic should I call?"
"Best first call: [Workshop A]. They service Marrickville and the Inner West, and specifically handle no-start problems, including batteries and starting or charging issues. They're currently listed as open today until 6pm. Another strong option: [Workshop B], mobile breakdown service, battery testing and on-site diagnosis."
The assistant picked its first call from a page that workshop had written about no-start problems in the Inner West. Saying plainly what you fix, and where, is what put it at the top of the answer.
We asked ChatGPT this question and quoted the answer. The workshop names are removed: they did not ask to appear here, and the point is the shortlist, not who was on it that day.
Now try it for your suburb
Open ChatGPT or Google's AI Mode (Gemini) and ask it this:
my car won't start in [your suburb]. Which mechanic should I call?
Read the workshops it names. If yours is missing, the rest of this page is about why, and what you can check today.
One answer is a glimpse, not a measurement. We wrote up how to check properly in about twenty minutes, with the questions to ask and a way to score the answers.
Why AI cannot see your workshop
AI assistants do not read your whole website and work your details out from the text. They work to a budget and pick up facts that are already stated plainly, skipping pages they would have to reason through. So what decides the answer is not how much you have written, it is how easy your key facts are to read.
- Structured data. Schema.org LocalBusiness states your name, address, hours and services in a form a machine reads directly, without parsing your prose. If your site does not carry it, an assistant either pieces your details together from other sources or leaves you out. The Foundation Audit tells you whether yours is present.
- Facts an assistant can lift. A page that states the answer in its first sentences can be quoted. A page that buries the same facts inside long marketing copy gives the model nothing easy to take, so it reaches for a source that is quicker to read. The Foundation Audit flags where your key facts are hard to find.
- Your Google Business Profile. For local questions, assistants lean on your Google Business Profile, because it is already structured and standardised. A complete, recently updated profile is the easy answer they reach for. The paid audit checks yours.
Why this is happening now
Google rolled out AI Overviews across Australia in October 2024, and added AI Mode, its full AI search experience, in October 2025. Both answer the question on the page rather than only listing links.
Access is becoming a setting rather than a given. Cloudflare now sorts AI crawlers into three kinds, Search, Agent and Training. From 15 September 2026, for domains newly onboarded to it, Agent and Training bots are blocked by default on pages that carry ads, while Search crawlers stay allowed.
The point is not that you are blocked today. It is that whether an assistant can read your site is now a switch, and most owners have never seen it.

What the Foundation Audit shows
The Foundation Audit reads your workshop's site the way an AI crawler does and reports, in plain language: whether your structured data is present and correct, whether your key pages can be read without JavaScript, and whether an AI assistant is being blocked from your site. You get your own numbers, not a general claim about mechanics and auto repair shops across Australia. Live testing in ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity, with the competitors they name instead, is part of the paid audit.

Questions about AI search for your workshop
We are booked out for a week. Why would AI matter?
A full diary is last month's marketing. The breakdown call is the job that pays best and books itself, and it goes to whoever the assistant names. Being findable is also what keeps the diary full when a franchise chain opens on the same road.
Does this replace our SEO?
No. It is a measurement, not a retainer. It tells you what a machine can and cannot read on your site today. If someone already does your SEO, the report is something you hand them, in numbers they can act on.
Can you guarantee ChatGPT will start recommending us?
No, and anyone who promises that is guessing. What we can do is find the technical reasons an assistant cannot read or trust your site, which in most cases are fixable, and measure whether that changes over time.
How these answers get made
The same machinery picks the shortlist for every trade, yours included. These guides explain it without the jargon.
How do I check if ChatGPT recommends my business?
You do not need any tools or logins to find out what AI assistants say about your business. You need twenty minutes, the right questions, and a way to score the answers so one lucky result does not mislead you. Here is the whole method, step by step.
Why ChatGPT recommends your competitor, not you
Ask an AI assistant to recommend a plumber, a cafe or an accountant in your area, and it will name a handful of businesses. If yours is not one of them, that is not bad luck. Here is what the answer is actually built from.
What is an AI visibility audit?
A regular SEO audit asks whether Google can rank you. An AI visibility audit asks a newer question: when a customer asks ChatGPT or Perplexity for a recommendation, are you in the answer? Here is exactly what one checks, and what it can and cannot promise.
