AI visibility for NDIS providers in Australia

A participant with a new plan asks AI who to go with. Does it name your service?

A new plan comes with funding and a decision nobody prepares you for. Participants, families and carers now put that decision to ChatGPT or Google's AI Overviews, and it answers with providers by name. A service missing from that answer is not compared and not rejected. It is absent.

A customer asks an AI assistant
[Service A]listed as open now
[Service B]300 reviews
[Service C]matches what was asked
Your service: not mentioned

Nothing records this. Your analytics can only count the people who arrived.

This is what the assistant actually answers

Real ChatGPT answer

"best NDIS provider in Blacktown, Sydney"

"[Service A] would be my first one to investigate if you want a larger, established local provider, because the combination of 4.9 stars and 335 reviews is more meaningful than a 5.0 rating based on only a handful of reviews. However, the best provider depends heavily on what your NDIS plan actually includes: Support Coordination, SIL, personal care, community access, respite, transport, OT, or psychosocial support."

Two things decided that answer, and neither was a marketing claim. It weighed review volume against rating, and then it matched providers to the supports a plan actually funds. A service that does not list which supports it delivers cannot be matched to the plan that needs them.

We asked ChatGPT this question and quoted the answer. The service names are removed: they did not ask to appear here, and the point is the shortlist, not who was on it that day.

Now try it for your suburb

Open ChatGPT or Google's AI Mode (Gemini) and ask it this:

best NDIS provider in [your suburb]

Read the services it names. If yours is missing, the rest of this page is about why, and what you can check today.

One answer is a glimpse, not a measurement. We wrote up how to check properly in about twenty minutes, with the questions to ask and a way to score the answers.

Why AI cannot see your service

AI assistants do not read your whole website and work your details out from the text. They work to a budget and pick up facts that are already stated plainly, skipping pages they would have to reason through. So what decides the answer is not how much you have written, it is how easy your key facts are to read.

  1. Structured data. Schema.org LocalBusiness states your name, address, hours and services in a form a machine reads directly, without parsing your prose. If your site does not carry it, an assistant either pieces your details together from other sources or leaves you out. The Foundation Audit tells you whether yours is present.
  2. Facts an assistant can lift. A page that states the answer in its first sentences can be quoted. A page that buries the same facts inside long marketing copy gives the model nothing easy to take, so it reaches for a source that is quicker to read. The Foundation Audit flags where your key facts are hard to find.
  3. Your Google Business Profile. For local questions, assistants lean on your Google Business Profile, because it is already structured and standardised. A complete, recently updated profile is the easy answer they reach for. The paid audit checks yours.

Why this is happening now

Google rolled out AI Overviews across Australia in October 2024, and added AI Mode, its full AI search experience, in October 2025. Both answer the question on the page rather than only listing links.

Access is becoming a setting rather than a given. Cloudflare now sorts AI crawlers into three kinds, Search, Agent and Training. From 15 September 2026, for domains newly onboarded to it, Agent and Training bots are blocked by default on pages that carry ads, while Search crawlers stay allowed.

The point is not that you are blocked today. It is that whether an assistant can read your site is now a switch, and most owners have never seen it.

What the Foundation Audit shows

The Foundation Audit reads your service's site the way an AI crawler does and reports, in plain language: whether your structured data is present and correct, whether your key pages can be read without JavaScript, and whether an AI assistant is being blocked from your site. You get your own numbers, not a general claim about NDIS providers across Australia. Live testing in ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity, with the competitors they name instead, is part of the paid audit.

Questions about AI search for your service

Our referrals come from support coordinators. Why would AI matter?

Coordinators are a real channel and a narrow one: they send you the participants already on their list. Self-managed and plan-managed participants choose for themselves, often with a family member doing the searching, and that search now returns provider names with reasons. Being listed clearly is also what lets a coordinator confirm you deliver the supports they are looking for.

Does this replace our SEO?

No. It is a measurement, not a retainer. It tells you what a machine can and cannot read on your site today. If someone already does your SEO, the report is something you hand them, in numbers they can act on.

Can you guarantee ChatGPT will start recommending us?

No, and anyone who promises that is guessing. What we can do is find the technical reasons an assistant cannot read or trust your site, which in most cases are fixable, and measure whether that changes over time.
