AI visibility for optometrists in Australia

AI now recommends where to get an eye test. Is it your practice?

An eye test is a small decision made quickly, usually by someone choosing between the practices on one street. They now ask ChatGPT or Google's AI Overviews, and it compares bulk billing, equipment and hours before naming a pick.

A customer asks an AI assistant
[Practice A]listed as open now
[Practice B]300 reviews
[Practice C]matches what was asked
Your practice: not mentioned

Nothing records this. Your analytics can only count the people who arrived.

This is what the assistant actually answers

Real ChatGPT answer

"I need an eye test in Newtown, Sydney. Where should I go?"

"If you're after a routine eye test in Newtown, you've got several good options right on King Street: [Practice A], my pick if you want a straightforward, affordable test. They offer bulk-billed eye examinations for eligible Medicare cardholders, plus retinal scanning and visual-field testing. [Practice B], a strong choice if you want a more comprehensive eye-health check."

It sorted the street by what each practice offers: bulk billing, retinal imaging, visual fields. Those are facts a practice either publishes in a readable form or does not get credited for.

We asked ChatGPT this question and quoted the answer. The practice names are removed: they did not ask to appear here, and the point is the shortlist, not who was on it that day.

Now try it for your suburb

Open ChatGPT or Google's AI Mode (Gemini) and ask it this:

I need an eye test in [your suburb]. Where should I go?

Read the practices it names. If yours is missing, the rest of this page is about why, and what you can check today.

One answer is a glimpse, not a measurement. We wrote up how to check properly in about twenty minutes, with the questions to ask and a way to score the answers.

Why AI cannot see your practice

AI assistants do not read your whole website and work your details out from the text. They work to a budget and pick up facts that are already stated plainly, skipping pages they would have to reason through. So what decides the answer is not how much you have written, it is how easy your key facts are to read.

  1. Structured data. Schema.org LocalBusiness states your name, address, hours and services in a form a machine reads directly, without parsing your prose. If your site does not carry it, an assistant either pieces your details together from other sources or leaves you out. The Foundation Audit tells you whether yours is present.
  2. Facts an assistant can lift. A page that states the answer in its first sentences can be quoted. A page that buries the same facts inside long marketing copy gives the model nothing easy to take, so it reaches for a source that is quicker to read. The Foundation Audit flags where your key facts are hard to find.
  3. Your Google Business Profile. For local questions, assistants lean on your Google Business Profile, because it is already structured and standardised. A complete, recently updated profile is the easy answer they reach for. The paid audit checks yours.

Why this is happening now

Google rolled out AI Overviews across Australia in October 2024, and added AI Mode, its full AI search experience, in October 2025. Both answer the question on the page rather than only listing links.

Access is becoming a setting rather than a given. Cloudflare now sorts AI crawlers into three kinds, Search, Agent and Training. From 15 September 2026, for domains newly onboarded to it, Agent and Training bots are blocked by default on pages that carry ads, while Search crawlers stay allowed.

The point is not that you are blocked today. It is that whether an assistant can read your site is now a switch, and most owners have never seen it.

What the Foundation Audit shows

The Foundation Audit reads your practice's site the way an AI crawler does and reports, in plain language: whether your structured data is present and correct, whether your key pages can be read without JavaScript, and whether an AI assistant is being blocked from your site. You get your own numbers, not a general claim about optometry practices across Australia. Live testing in ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity, with the competitors they name instead, is part of the paid audit.

Questions about AI search for your practice

We compete with the big chains. Why would AI matter?

This is where an independent can win. The assistant compared what each practice actually offers, not who has the bigger advertising budget, and it named a pick with a reason. Stating your services clearly is cheaper than outspending a chain and it is what the answer reads.

Does this replace our SEO?

No. It is a measurement, not a retainer. It tells you what a machine can and cannot read on your site today. If someone already does your SEO, the report is something you hand them, in numbers they can act on.

Can you guarantee ChatGPT will start recommending us?

No, and anyone who promises that is guessing. What we can do is find the technical reasons an assistant cannot read or trust your site, which in most cases are fixable, and measure whether that changes over time.
