Can you check your own site with ChatGPT or Claude Code?
You can open ChatGPT, or run a Claude Code skill, and get a confident read on your website for nothing. So why pay for a check. The honest answer is not that you cannot do it. It is that a free tool guesses wherever it has no real data about you.

You have probably already tried. You opened ChatGPT, asked how your website is doing or whether people can find you in search, and got a long, confident answer. It reads well. And that raises a fair thought: if you can find this out for free in five minutes, why would anyone pay for a check. Some people go a step further and run a Claude Code skill, a ready made add-on that promises to audit a site almost on its own. This guide answers the question honestly. Not whether you can do it, because you can, but whether what you were told is actually true about your business.
The short version
- ChatGPT sounds certain even when it does not know. Ask the same question again in a fresh window and the answer will most likely be different, because it fills gaps with plausible guesses.
- A ready-made skill runs the same model underneath. Without your live data it guesses just the same, only presented more neatly.
- A free tool cannot see your local results. It has no live picture of who shows up on the map or who a customer near you sees first.
- One friendly yes does not prove the AI knows you. The model tends to agree, and it can mix you up with a business or person with a similar name.
- Some of it you can do yourself today. Fill out your Google Business Profile, keep your name, address and phone the same everywhere, and check your site on your phone.
Want to know where your business stands? Our Standard Audit reads up to 40 pages of your site, checks up to 300 Google searches you already show up for, sets you against up to three local competitors, and shows what ChatGPT says when customers ask up to 5 questions. A$149 one-off, delivered in two business days, no access to your site needed.

Try it right now. Ask ChatGPT what position your website holds in Google for a search your customers actually use. It will give you a spot, confidently, with an explanation. Now ask again in a fresh window. The answer will most likely be different.
That is not a glitch. It is how these tools work. They assemble a plausible answer from what they have seen across the internet in general, not from what is happening with your website today. When they do not have enough about you, they fill the gap with something that sounds convincing. For a business owner that difference matters. You are getting an opinion dressed up as a fact, and money decisions made on that kind of opinion are risky.
A ready-made skill does not change the main thing
This one is easy to fall for. A skill in Claude Code feels more serious than a chat window, because it is a developer tool. But the same model runs underneath. A tidy wrapper and some automation do not give it any real knowledge of your particular business. If the tool does not have your live data, it will fill the gaps with plausible guesses just the same, only presented more neatly.
A polished report full of invented numbers is more dangerous than an honest “I do not know”, because it is easy to believe. So the question is not chat versus skill. The question is whether the answer is built on real data or not.
A free tool does not know your street
For a local business, the local results are everything. An electrician in North Sydney and an electrician in Newcastle live in two different worlds, even if their websites look alike. Who shows up on the map, who is near you, who the customer sees first when they type “near me”.
A free model cannot see any of that. It has no live picture of your local situation. It can talk about SEO in general, but it will not tell you what is happening in your suburb, today. And that is the only thing that counts for you. This is also why a site can look perfect to you and still arrive almost blank to a search engine, which we cover in when your website loads for people but not for Google.
“But the AI knows me” is not proven by one question
Here is a separate trap. People ask the model directly, “do you know this company”. It replies “yes, of course” and even describes you a little. It looks like all is well. That answer has two problems. First, the model tends to agree and say pleasant things, so a friendly yes proves nothing. Second, if there is a business or a person with a similar name somewhere, even in another state, the model can easily mix you up with them and credit you with things that are not yours. You read it as “they know me”, when the answer was never really about you.
One question in one chat is not a check. It is just a polite reply.
If you want to test this properly by hand, there is a way to do it that guards against a single lucky answer. We wrote it up step by step in how to check if ChatGPT recommends your business.
What “free” actually costs
A free tool does not mean a free result. Add it up honestly. A couple of evenings to work it out and double check everything. The risk of taking a nice but wrong answer as the truth and then acting on it. And no comparison at all: you will not see how you stack up against the competitors down the road that your customers go to instead.
Your time is only free on paper. And a wrong decision costs far more than a check.
What you should genuinely do yourself today
We are not here to scare you into buying something. Some of this you really can and should do yourself, for free, right now.
- Fill out your Google Business Profile completely. Opening hours, service area, phone number, photos. For a local business that is half the job.
- Make sure your business name, address and phone number are written the same way everywhere and match your profile. Inconsistency here genuinely hurts.
- Open your own website on your phone, the way a customer does. Check that it loads quickly, that the phone number is easy to see, and that you can call in one tap.
It is not hard, it works, and it is your patch to look after.
Where doing it yourself ends and paying starts to make sense
The difference is simple. A free tool, whether a chat or a skill, will at best hint that something might be wrong. It will not tell you what exactly, how serious it is, who is overtaking you, or what to fix first.
We answer with a measurement on a specific date, not an opinion. Not “looks fine to me”, but a clear picture of where you actually stand and what to do about it. That is something you can base a money decision on. If you would rather see it than read about it, the Foundation Audit on seenmetric.com.au reads your homepage the way Google and AI assistants do and emails you the top issues, so you can compare your own guess against something measured.
